Years On Earth – rare collector’s item from VOD
First things first: My blog went down, it’s now on a new server, but the database is not 100% restored, you may find incomplete posts – hope I can fix it.
In my mail today: Years On Earth’s vinyl debut, 30 years after their highly collectible cassettes came out. A wonderful item, this double LP with 7″ single. I’m no vinyl specialist, but to me it seems to be a work of extra quality. Heavy cardboard cover, heavy vinyl, plus an impressive band bio on an enclosed thick sheet – this has been made for eternity.
And it’s limited to 500 numbered copies. Better be quick. You can get it for only 25 € directly from Vinyl On Demand.
I did not compare yet to the cassette releases, which I featured on this blog here a while ago (and which have been rereleased through Calypso Now, where they are still available) – but the vinyl sounds great. Certainly the best masters have been used, plus the vinyl mastering has been done by an industrial music specialist, Andres Peterson at ghostsounds.net.
The two LP use tracks from the three official releases of Years On Earth, plus almost an LP worth of bonus tracks (if you count in the 7″ EP), all recordings from the period.
I’m very happy that the tapes of Years On Earth are still available through my label, plus a later solo recording by Bob Roke, one half of the duo. You should get them all, the vinyl, the cassettes, as long as it’s still possible.

Stude: Ds Läbe Vorem Tod
So heisst die neue Kassette, die morgen nun endlich definitiv erscheinen soll. 
Ich weiss gar nicht, wo ich mein Loblied beginnen soll. Bei den Texten vielleicht? Denn Stude schreibt so eine Art Brut Lyrik, mit verblüffenden Wendungen sicher, aber diese sind nie das Ziel, wirken nie aufgesetzt oder angestrengt, man fragt sich ganz im Gegenteil, warum nicht alle solche Texte schreiben

I wot di bimer wi mis Portmonnai (Portmonneeeee)
(das zu einem Reggae der allerersten Güteklasse, schliesslich spielt die halbe Aristokratie des Bieler Undergrounds mit! Jene Hälfte, die echt spielen kann und trotzdem vor keiner Schludrigkeit halt macht – einfach nur noch grossartig)
Diese Leute können irgendwie alles spielen – Free Jazz, Billigfunk, BilligDub, BilligReggae, BilligSchlager, BilligCountry – und es überzeugt immer, ohne Übertreibung jetzt.
Aufgenommen wurde in den diversen Heimstudios, und ich muss schon sagen: Die haben die Technik im Griff. Der Bass pumpt, die Maschinen klingen richtig gut und alt, dann kommt plötzlich ein Beasty-Boys-ähnlicher Partymitgröhler mit Dead-Kennedys-Gitarren. Jedes Stück ein Ereignis, welches man mit Spannung erwartet.
Da kann ich nur noch den Hut ziehen und euch gleichzeitig die Kassette ans Herz legen. Eine Kassette für Jung und Alt, halt. So ab 8 Jahren, glaube ich. Grad richtig zu Weihnachten! Vielleicht mit dem passenden Kassettengerät für das Veloguidon dazu?

Nick Porsche: New tape “Hit-Breaker”
Need I say more about Nick Porsche? I already wrote a review of his gig at Labieu, and we’ve finally got the live recordings together. The cassette will be released in about a week, time we need for mastering and copying the tapes and have the cover printed. Here’s a rough mix of “Doreen” from my Audacity file for pre-listening.

Do not miss to order here from Calypso Now (or buy directly from him at gigs!). His first cassette “Deutsche Hitparade Vega 2000” is still available, and it’s very recommended too. This was his first release with tracks from his Apple notebook archives, quite different from his live sound, so you really should get it. He also has a finished album in the can waiting for CD release, which of course can not be handled by Calypso Now, we really do hold on to analog cassettes… So watch this space for more news about the man!

Sich in Hoehlen schlagen
Seit ich mein Kassettenlabel Calypso Now im November 2009 wieder reaktiviert habe, ist einiges passiert. Das schaut ihr euch am besten in meinem Shop oder auf dem ‘gedruckten’ Flyer an.
Die Westschweizer Journalisten haben das Projekt schon mehrfach aufgegriffen, meist radiophonisch, hier nun auch gedruckt in der ‘Vitamine Orange’ Tribune Le Matin. Gefaellt mir gut, der Artikel.
Wuerde es gerne uebersetzen, aber dafuer gibt’s ja die Google Sprachtools. Das toent dann etwa so:
Calypso Jetzt hat das Label schlug sich mit Aufnahmen in Hoehlen, oft mit einer Revox-Recorder. Des productions limitees a 150 exemplaires, des cassettes vendues entre 5 et 9 francs: Hotcha s’est contente du minimum, comme en temoigne son logement fait de bric et de broc. Produktion limitiert auf 150 Exemplare von Kassetten zwischen 5 und 9 Franken Hotcha lediglich die Mindestanforderungen, wie sie ihre Gehaeuse Kleinigkeiten gemacht belegt verkauft.

Weihnachtsgeschenk
Alle Unternehmen und Institutionen sind an Weihnachten ganz weihnaechtlich gestimmt, um endlich so richtig schwarze Zahlen zu schreiben. Da will ich nicht abseits stehen. Hier also mein Weihnachtsgeschenk, verknuepft mit der obligaten Werbebotschaft. Was wollt ihr zuerst? Geschenk oder Botschaft? ueberlegt’s euch mal…
OK, wie ihr wollt: Beides gleichzeitig, so sei es!
Nun habe ich ja mein Kassettenlabel aus den Fruehachtzigern wieder belebt, ganz einfach darum, weil es total Spass macht. Kauft ueberhaupt wer die Kassetten?
Falsche Frage!
Die Frage ist, produzieren Musiker heute ueberhaupt noch Kassetten. Und die Antwort gibt’s hier: Ich will nun kurz von meiner neuen Kassettenserie reden, die, welche keinen Namen hat, aber ein ganz tolles Aussehen! Etwa so:
Und das alles in Hochglanz in einem chemischen Verfahren eingeritzt oder so, ich mache das nicht selber, zahle aber ein Vermoegen dafuer, also muss es gut sein. Schoen ist es ja allemal.
Und wie das klingt, wollt Ihr wissen? Da kann ich nur mit Pull My Daisy aufwarten, meiner frueheren Band, die anderen Sachen will ich verkaufen (auch PMD kann man kaufen, Cover siehe oben). Ihr hoert hier ein Demo, muss aus 1988 sein, ich habe noch in einer Kiste eine gute Handvoll davon gefunden, das hatte damals kein spezielles Cover. Habe es ein bisschen ueberarbeitet (mit Audacity, ich geb’s zu…) und neu auf die alten Kassetten kopiert, das alte Cover noch auf die Kassette geklebt, und dieses neue als Hommage auch an einen meiner praegenden Einfluesse, Ted Robert eben, voller Liebe hingetrasht.

New Years On Earth tape
Some time ago I wrote here about Years On Earth from Northampton, a band that I was in touch with in ’84. I had two of their tapes in my label program, license releases, that is: YOE-2 ‘Site’, YOE-3 ‘Worlds Apart’. Read it here: http://www.calypsonow.ch/catalogue/bands/years-on-earth/.
When I reactivated my cassette label last september, Bob Roke from Years On Earth sent me by happy coincidence a solo work he had done in 2003 – he did not know then that I was back in business again. Of course I was thrilled, because I was badly looking for the whereabouts of the band. So of course I asked Bob if I could release the CD on cassette. And now it’s here for the taking:
The cassette is a C50 with 15 tracks, it’s a Calypso Now exclusive release, and it goes by the number YOE-4, thus continuing the band’s work. YOE-3 was ‘Worlds Apart’ from 1984, by the way.
Bob uses dark ambient electronics combined with natural sounds or field recordings, and he is still a master of the bedroom electronics. And I remember that YOE used to build part of their equipment themselves. You hear the Years On Earth heritage, of course, but you find less of their song structures here. What always amazes me, since their first recordings, are the high quality standards. No fillers, no fiddling around with the buttons, although it definitely goes under ‘industrial’. In short, a very good production, and a very special tape. The same goes for all the Years On Earth productions, and they are all rereleased by Calypso Now at the same time!

Calypso Now: Comeback of the cassette label!
Well, you may call me foolish, old fashioned, die hard, brain dead or whatever, but I had to do it, the time is right, my tape deck is up and running, the Calypso Now label is back again!
It took me a year to unpack most of my boxes, where I found quite some rarities from the early 80’s on, those are now added to the Discogs database (well, 2/3 actually). But more important: I found several dozens of archive copies of Calypso Now releases from 83 to 88, plus leftovers from the later tapes, and most of the master tapes. So, what to do with them?
Here’s what: Archive tapes are and will be sold on the Discogs marketplace, where I also sell items from my collection – have to get rid of a lot, it’s taking up more space than I can afford. The offer is constantly changing, so make sure to check it out at least once a month, these tapes may never come your way again, who knows, a lot has been lost and thrown when people moved or married. I might be one of the few exceptions to this.
I’m also reissuing some tapes from the 80’s again, some that were important, some of my all time favorites, some that got overlooked when they came out, some that the world has been waiting for. And there will definitely be new releases as well. And they will be on cassette.
I came across this above mention of Calypso Now in the Out Of Depression magazine of 1988, it seems I released 1700 cassettes in 5 years. This is not a lot, because this was for 200 different releases, so you can imagine that some sold very very few, less than 10 copies. Cassettes were for the very refined taste then, as they are now, you’ll agree.
Just one thing: Do not wait 5 years to order, who knows how long I will be able to do this, it get’s harder and harder to find the raw material that I’m looking for. Plus, I’ll gonna be 60 next year (ouch!).

Zehn edle Finger schreiben ueber Calypso Now
Im Moment bin ich sehr beschaeftigt damit, mein Label in Discogs zu digitalisieren. Deshalb dient dieser Blog im Moment auch der Dokumentablage, wie ihr unschwer sicher schon festgestellt habt.
Gestern habe ich auf der Rueckseite des Einlageblattes zum Sampler “Wer mit Wem?” einen Artikel in der Lokalzeitung aus der Tastatur von Michael Angele gefunden. Daran sind natuerlich verschiedene Aspekte interessant, ich werde mich hueten, diese hier alle aufzuzaehlen – schliesslich sind wir hier nicht bei klatschheftli.ch. Ich erwaehne nur den politoekonomischen: Der Artikel beschreibt ziemlich gut, wie das Kassettenlabel funktioniert hat. Und den historischen vielleicht auch noch: Er muss von 1985 sein.
