Calypso Now: Comeback of the cassette label!

Well, you may call me foolish, old fashioned, die hard, brain dead or whatever, but I had to do it, the time is right, my tape deck is up and running, the Calypso Now label is back again!

It took me a year to unpack most of my boxes, where I found quite some rarities from the early 80’s on, those are now added to the Discogs database (well, 2/3 actually). But more important: I found several dozens of archive copies of Calypso Now releases from 83 to 88, plus leftovers from the later tapes, and most of the master tapes. So, what to do with them?

Here’s what: Archive tapes are and will be sold on the Discogs marketplace, where I also sell items from my collection – have to get rid of a lot, it’s taking up more space than I can afford. The offer is constantly changing, so make sure to check it out at least once a month, these tapes may never come your way again, who knows, a lot has been lost and thrown when people moved or married. I might be one of the few exceptions to this.

I’m also reissuing some tapes from the 80’s again, some that were important, some of my all time favorites, some that got overlooked when they came out, some that the world has been waiting for. And there will definitely be new releases as well. And they will be on cassette.

I came across this above mention of Calypso Now in the Out Of Depression magazine of 1988, it seems I released 1700 cassettes in 5 years. This is not a lot, because this was for 200 different releases, so you can imagine that some sold very very few, less than 10 copies. Cassettes were for the very refined taste then, as they are now, you’ll agree.

Just one thing: Do not wait 5 years to order, who knows how long I will be able to do this, it get’s harder and harder to find the raw material that I’m looking for. Plus, I’ll gonna be 60 next year (ouch!).

Starspot Compilation

Swiss Compilation, numbered. Rather pop oriented, at the right wing of left field, if you know what I mean (no, not political). If not: Just listen to Dani Hitzig, swiss pop radio DJ, sing to a background of James Last or the like. Or (now famous author) Michael Angele sing a snappy tune about the evils of Nazism. Found a whole box of numbered copies that has been forgotten! Special price 8 €!! Was also released in the UK by Bi-Joopiter.

Sonique Suisse

Swiss Compilation for release in the US through audiofile tapes (Carl Howard). Later generations will not be able to shut their mouth listening to this, although we have real music here, but I think besides The Young Gods (an unreleased live track) no artist here was known to more than a couple of hundred persons at the most. Ok, there are a few exceptions, I agree. Can you spot them? 90 minutes of pure madness for 14 € only. A highlight!

Money, shop, prices

Part of the money will be used to pay for the relaunch of the label, but I will continue to give all the profits to Kiva Microcredits. This will also allow me to rerelease tapes by artists that I can not find again, like Steven Tetzloff or Evan Schoenfeld, or that have passed away, like Nikky Sudden. Look forward to their releases, then – they are among my all time faves!

Angeldust: Hier der Reprint

Im Juni 1985 erschien in Biel das ambitionierte Popmagazin Angeldust zum ersten Mal. Drei Nummern sollten es insgesamt werden, dann war schon wieder Schluss. Wenn man sich das Magazin heute ansieht, wundert es nicht, dass die drei hauptsächlichen Autoren, die beiden Redaktoren Michael Angele und Martin Schori sowie Rudi Tüscher (Chef vom Dienst, ich selber) nach drei Monaten genug hatten – da haben sich drei beidseitig brennende Kerzen in kürzester Zeit gegenseitig geschmolzen, so kann man das natürlich nicht machen. Dafür aber haben die Nachgeborenen nun ein echtes Oeuvre zu bestaunen – hier also die erste Nummer, Angeldust 6/85 [pdf]

Schon in der ersten Nummer kommt die Frechheit der Macher zum Vorschein. Da werden etwa Inserenten aufgelistet und gleich wieder provokativ gestrichen, offenbar hatten diese sich geweigert, auch ein Inserat zu schalten. Oder ein in letzter Sekunde eingereichter Konzertbericht von Busenfreund Kleo Halbeisen, von Hand auf einen Fresszettel geschmiert, mit dem gross hingeschriebenen Zusatz “Betreffend David Thomas” versehen, wird als winziges Faksimile abgedruckt, nur mit der Lupe ist es halbwegs lesbar! Derselbe Kleo wird ob seiner Reportage aus Winterthur gleich im Einleitungstext der Redaktion liebevoll des sozialen Realismus unter Anwendung des modernen Kurzsatzes geziehen, ja recht eigentlich durch den Kakao gezogen. Keine Ahnung, was gegen Sätze wie die folgenden einzuwenden ist. Ihr etwa?

“Lampenfieber, ja und nein. Eine Spannung, wie wird es werden? Hoffentlich gut. Die Subterraneans gehen an die Instrumente. Fröhlicher, harter Beat, keine Eigenkompositionen. Lust zum Tanzen, aber keiner und auch keine wagt den ersten Schritt. Exhibitionisten gesucht. Die Stimmung freundlich, distanziert, nicht überbordend. Die Gäste kennen sich. Die Bands sind ein willkommenes Uebel. Alle sind mit sich selber beschäftigt. Ihre Zugabe.

Scheisse jetzt sind wir dran. Umbauen, die letzte Zigarrette.”

Also, ihr? Ahnung??

Angeldust’s frechste Nummer: Klatsch Tratsch Boulevard

Dies ist nun die zweite Nummer von Angeldust (Angeldust 7/1985) [pdf].

Wer mit einem Titel “Hungry For What: Die Menschenhasser” aufmacht, schielt in der kleinen Schweizer Szene natürlich eindeutig auf die Auflage; immerhin war die Band nicht nur eine der Besten zu der Zeit, sie wurde in Zürich und Bern auch als arrogant angesehen – dabei ist Arroganz nur der gesunde Bieler Reflex, der die Stadt dann auch nachhaltig in der jüngeren Rockgeschichte verankert hat. Aber das ist eine längere Geschichte, dazu müsst ihr schon regelmässig diesen Blog hier lesen, um der Sache definitiv auf die Spur zu kommen!

Auch Rudi Dietrich kriegt in dieser Nummer sein Fett ab, sehe ich grad, hatte ich ganz vergessen. Doch auch Rudi hat, wie Buzz von HFW, die Sache damals sportlich genommen. Und uns seine Sympathie nie entzogen. Schön!

In dieser Nummer beginnt auch die zweiteilige Serie über Walti Anselmo, die Gitarrenlegende der Beat- und ProgRock-Ära, Oral History nennt man das in den Universitäten, habe ich mir sagen lassen.

Angeldust’s Abgesang: New Wave Revival 15 Jahre zu früh angekündigt

Dies hier ist die letzte Nummer des Bieler Musik Magazins Mit Nationaler Ausstrahlung, Angeldust 8 (1985) [pdf] .

Lustigerweise hatte hier Chefredakteur Michael Angele das New Wave Revival bereits 15 Jahre zu früh vorher gesagt – um 2000 ist es dann Wirklichkeit geworden, sagt zumindest jemand in der Wikipedia. Weiters werden in dieser Nummer wieder die Steckenpferde der Macher zu Schanden geritten: Prefab Sprout, Deep Freeze Mice, Frauen in der Popmusik, Popmusik und Wissenschaft. Auch Handfestes findet sich natürlich wieder, z.B. der zweite Teil des heute noch grundlegenden Walti-Anselmo-Interviews oder News aus Schaffhausen von Lokalmatador Stephan E. Ramming. Die ganz grosse Form findet Angeldust aber ohne Zweifel im grossen Erlebnisbericht Angeles über die Ostschweizer Szene, die er in nur zwei Tagen bis zur Erschöpfung und bis in den hintersten Winkel (Rebstein) ausrecherchiert hatte.

Danach wurde das Magazin aus menschlichen Gründen eingestellt – die Abonnenten noch mit einer Ausgabe auf Kassette ruhig gestellt.

Stupid Stupid was the name of the radio show I did for several years on the local station, two hours weekly. Here is a complete show from 1984 or ‘85, I believe.

Zehn edle Finger schreiben über Calypso Now

Im Moment bin ich sehr beschäftigt damit, mein Label in Discogs zu digitalisieren. Deshalb dient dieser Blog im Moment auch der Dokumentablage, wie ihr unschwer sicher schon festgestellt habt.

Gestern habe ich auf der Rückseite des Einlageblattes zum Sampler “Wer mit Wem?” einen Artikel in der Lokalzeitung aus der Tastatur von Michael Angele gefunden. Daran sind natürlich verschiedene Aspekte interessant, ich werde mich hüten, diese hier alle aufzuzählen – schliesslich sind wir hier nicht bei klatschheftli.ch. Ich erwähne nur den politökonomischen: Der Artikel beschreibt ziemlich gut, wie das Kassettenlabel funktioniert hat. Und den historischen vielleicht auch noch: Er muss von 1985 sein.

XXX sells

I’ve just scanned some parts of the Calypso Now catalogues from the 80’s and I’m astonished by this ‘hit-and-run’ graphic style that just came natural because the tools weren’t really available – some catalogues were even printed in my kitchen on those heavy machines they used to have in schools, where you typed your text on a so-called stencil, and with this you could print up to several hundred A-4 sized copies, until the stencil just ripped itself apart. That was by far the cheapest way to publish a catalogue.

Later, when the label got ‘bigger’, I could afford to have flyers printed, at some time the catalogue came on a poster, from which I scanned a small part here. So, let’s talk about sex!

The “Sex sells” slogan was used as a provocation for the swiss postal service, the catalogues being folded in a transparent enveloppe so you saw the picture and the slogan, but couldn’t tell if the penis would be visible as a whole. Well, the provocation worked marvellously, the catalogues were refused by the post office here, which gave me the opportunity to put a ‘Censored’-sticker on the cock, which anyway wasn’t really visible, as you can see for yourself. Why this cheap provocation? Well, I was a bit fed up by all those shops flashing naked tits around to sell some product, so I really had to prove my point. As I said, it worked great. It would still work today, bet?

Steven Tetzloff, by the way, the man with the penis, was a guitar player from San Francisco who played in rather shitty New Wave bands (by my humble opinion ), but he made three solo tapes which I still adore; all of them have been released here by Calypso Now and I will upload some of his music soon. He did them really cheap in his bathroom, with nice distorted guitar and a cheasy rhythm box, kind of a Velvet-Underground-play-Suicide sound. Suicide? No, not suicide as an action, I mean Suicide, the band, with Alan Vega.

I liked the music of Steven Tetzloff so much that I also put him on the last compilation tape from Calypso Now, the Starspot Compilation (click here for a full picture of the catalogue and more information about Starspot), and on a promotional single, called Sex Sells, of course. By the way: I must still have some copies of this 7 incher laying around here somewhere, will probably have to dig in the boxes I’ve moved with at least three times in the last 10 years without opening them once more. I’ll keep you posted. Might interest you that the tape and the single also contains a marvelous track from Herr Dr. Michael Angele, now Leiter Kultur at german paper and web community Der Freitag… hehehe – more is here to come!

Oh, almost forgot: here’s some tracks on the Calypso Now Myspace space, Angele’s also at hand. Check out the the Trash Boys there, I think they were great. From Geneva.
