Global Metal

Filed under: Uncategorized — Hotcha @ 5:21 pm

Sometimes, I have my metal period. It never lasts very long, because, honestly, it’s too much of the same all over, it’s GENRE. I love genre in movies, but in music, I need to be surprised. Anyway, I recently came across a bunch of Metal DVD that made me post an order of € 100 at amazon. It was this movie here that put me in the mood: Sam Dunn’s ‘Metal – A Headbanger’s Journey’, I watched it for free on dailymotion, it’s only the french overdubbed version, though. Better buy from amazon, it’s cheap! It shows Dunn, a 28 years old anthropologist and metal head since the age of 13 telling the story of metal in a really peculiar and new way, of course with lots of great music. Just watch it yourself on dailymotion.

I was getting so metal, I started looking for Dunn’s second documentary, Global Metal. I did find it on the web, downloadable versions, you know the kind, split into like seven files. But I also found a location where I could watch about an hour of the movie, after that I was cut off and should have paid. I decided to order it on DVD instead. It’s that great. Global Metal shows Dunn travelling round the globe looking for metal heads in strange places like India, Indonesia, China, Israel, Palestine, but also in Brazil and Japan, and he really has some stories to tell, and the concert footage is always very impressing, filmed in arenas as well as in clubs and rehearsal, where you can catch local bands who really have something to offer. So the movie works in both senses, as a documentary of metal and politics on other continents and as a showcase for these sometimes quite special metal bands.

I said I did order a whole bunch of metal DVD at amazon after seeing those movies. I will not bore you with more details, but I have to absolutely mention one them: It’s the Iron Maiden 2008 World Tour documentation ‘Flight 666′, filmed by Dunn and his team, so this is a very promising setup. As for the other movies, maybe I’ll tell you about those another time, if they are worth it. We’ll see.

  1. HA! Thanks. You’ve just given me the idea for my son’s Christmas present – he’s always “metal”, most of the time he’s “Iron Maiden”.

  2. to balance the “666 – number of the beast”-stuff with something more educational, you really should also order Global Metal. Mindblowing. Also encouraging for valley natives and ‘bridge-and-tunnel’-people ;-)

  3. Will do.

His godmother tried it with Motörhead’s “Stage Fright”, but wasn’t very successful.

  4. Ha! I love Zappadong’s comments! (Musste einfach auch mal gesagt werden.) And please accept my sincere condolences… ;) I hope he has headphones for the times you are not “metal”…
